It's in my purse!

'You can tell a lot about a person by what's in their purse.' Spoonflower's prompt this week was to create a pattern using the items in your purse!

I don't know what story is told by the items in my purse, but here it is! Of course artistic license has been applied here with the artwork on the items like the notebook, makeup bag, phone case and purse. (I drew the items with the artwork that I wish I had!)

Llama Llove!

Spoonflower's prompt this week… Llama's!
'Llama Llove' ©2015 Patty Rybolt Designs. All Rights Reserved.

'Llama Llove' repeat
"It's time to travel to the South American Andes mountains to show your llama love! Give a go at creating a lovable llama themed design."

This pattern started like all of my designs with research on the prompt. I loved the pictures on Pinterest of the Peruvian Llama Glama. The people there adorn their pets with pompom's and decorative blankets and thought it would be fun to use some of their bright colors in this design.
Next came the drawings… I drew lots of llama's, pompom's, flowers, birds and cacti on my iPad, then imported them into photoshop. I developed the icons using my color palette and put together a repeat. Ta Dah!!

Suzani by the Sea!

Coral, mint, black and white...
'Suzani by the Sea' ©2015 Patty Rybolt Designs. All Rights Reserved.
Spoonflower's challenge this week was to create a design using all four colors in this restricted palette,
restricted palette
no less, no more. The only restriction was the color, the design concept this week was left wide open, so I chose to make a Suzani* type print.

I had drawn hundreds of these elements for MATS 4A this fall and was looking for a way to make a design for Spoonflower using my sketches, so I opened my sketches in Photoshop and added my new palette. Then built my layered elements into designed motifs and created my pattern.

(*Suzani is an embroidered and decorative tribal textile made in Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and other Central Asian countries. Popular design motifs can include the sun, flowers, leaves, vines and an occasional bird or two.)

Groundhog Day!

The Spoonflower Design Challenge of the week is a celebration of Punxsutawney Phil as he prepares for his moment in the sun (or not)!
Groundhog Day. ©2015 Patty Rybolt Designs. All Rights Reserved.

Groundhogs are such funny little animals, and they were fun to draw. I started with some research online, mostly photos, to understand the details and of these creatures. They have smallish ears, finger-like hands that are darker than their coarse fur and their tails are smaller than a beaver. (I took creative license with the top hats and bow ties.) I drew my groundhogs in the Adobe Ideas App on my iPad and then opened it in Photoshop where I chose my color palette and assembled my characters. When the icons were 'built' I copied and pasted them into a new file for my Spoonflower pattern. I added the flowers and veggies at this stage as well as the background texture, vines and hand drawn type!
Happy Groundhog Day on February 2nd!!

Under the Sea 1-2-3... Counting for Spoonflower!

Happy New Year!
The first design post of the new year is all about celebrating Mathematics!
Under the Sea 1-2-3! ©2015 Patty Rybolt Designs.
All Rights Reserved.

I toyed with trying to use my daughter's calculus homework as a base for a typographical solution to this week's challenge, but then I started drawing. Picture books for counting came to mind and I decided to change gears and go with an under the sea theme.

I drew tons of sea creatures and numbers in my sketchbook and took pictures of them with my iPad. I opened the pictures in the Adobe Ideas app on my iPad and drew better versions of my illustrations to import into photoshop (where I assembled my icons in color.)

My favorite part of this process is adding simple details to each and every icon. The textures, shapes and colors bring each character to life and give them a personality! The last step is the hardest part for me… the repeat. Putting my artwork into a technical repeat is my nemesis and I vow to master it in 2015!

Voting started on Wednesday, December 31st and continues until January 8th, 2015! Please Vote!

2015 Goals…
With one design now completed for 2015 I'm hoping to continue with at least 3 designs per month using the Spoonflower prompts as well as Lilla Rogers Assignment Bootcamp projects. I'm setting goals to finish my website and submit my art to some new companies to build my business. Let's just see what happens, the worst they can say is no. Wish me luck!
Happy New Year!

Gingerbread Village Toile!

The design theme this week… 'Create a toile de Jouy - style fabric design using a single color on the theme of winter.'
The first part of my research was to look up the definition of Toile de Jouy. These fabrics are described as a 'repeated pattern of a complex pastoral scene', usually printed in red, black or blue.
The concept for this design came from my daughters. They spent an evening with their friends decorating gingerbread houses over Thanksgiving break from university and I used their creations as my inspiration.
I researched and drew sketches of gingerbread houses, trees, deer, etc. When I had my rough sketches I  took a picture of them with my iPad and opened them in the Adobe Ideas app and drew cleaner versions of my sketches in black and white. I opened the PDF in Photoshop where I 'built' my icons in layers and in color. I know there has to be an easier way to do this but I like the hand drawn look that I get from doing it this way.
This design required loads of details in order to give it the traditional Toile feel. Details like the roof tiles, icicles, trees, fences, the deer and their blankets, window details, the bicycle, sleigh and the two fancy ladies, took a lot of extra time. I think I spent about 25+ hours from start to finish on this print!

Kittens in mittens

Spoonflower's design this week is cat-themed, again.
I'm more of a dog person myself, but here it is…

Marching Band for Spoonflower!

Marching Band for Spoonflower! ©2014 Patty Rybolt Designs. All Rights Reserved.
The design contest this week at Spoonflower… celebrating marching bands!

I started this design as I normally would, with research on the internet and Pinterest. The most interesting bits that I found were vintage ads for band uniform catalogues. I took note of the details on the vintage uniforms and decided to incorporate them into my design. I wanted to use certain instruments associated with a marching band and drew them and my marchers in my usual loose fashion on my iPad.

Next, I opened the Adobe Ideas file in Photoshop and chose my color palette. Most of the band images online were using the same theme of red and black uniforms, so I chose a palette that was a little different. The blue and yellow worked well together and the green was a natural for the background.

I wanted the colors of the marchers to reflect a real marching band, so diversity was important. I built the characters in Photoshop and then placed each one in proper marching position on a new 4.5x10.5" file, the idea is to set up for a 1/2 brick layout. I added my green in the background and a dot texture for interest. Finally adding the notes to help with the overall pattern design!

Preview on the 1/2 brick pattern is a quarter yards (21" x 18"). Voting starts on Thursday, September 11th, 2014. Please Vote!

Herbs for Spoonflower!

This week on Spoonflower... Herbs!
Herb's Herbs!  ©2014 Patty Rybolt Designs. All Rights Reserved.
Concept…
The idea for this design came from looking at Pinterest and all of the illustrated recipes that I admire on my food illustration board. I wanted to try one. Seeing as it was herb week I thought a nice Caprese Salad would be fun. A Caprese Salad consists of buffalo mozzarella, fresh tomato and fresh basil. I thought I would add a few other herbs as well seeing as it is herb week… rosemary, thyme + parsley. A loaf of fresh bread, olives and olive oil were also added to complete the menu! Once I had the concept together I started on the execution of the design.

Execution…
I tend to go at these designs in the same way.
1. I start with reference material, looking at herbs and tomatoes and bottles etc.
2. Sketch the items in my moleskin sketchbook.
3. Photograph my rough sketches with my iPad.
4. Open the photos in my Adobe Ideas App and do cleaner sketches over the roughs. (With my finger). This app allows you to draw freeform vector illustrations virtually anywhere!
5. Send the clean drawings to my desktop computer and open them in Photoshop. (I put them in 'the cloud'.)
6. Choose a color palette and color the drawings in layers.
7. Open a new file in the size that I want my final pattern to be and build layers of colors to make my images.
8. Burn and dodge to add depth if needed.
9. Adjust the individual images to make a good composition for a repeat pattern.

I don't know if this is the right way to do this, but it works for me. I like drawing by hand and this method allows me to keep a hand drawn look to my illustrations.

A Rhino for Spoonflower!

This week, I've created a fabric design that celebrates rhinos!
'Rhino + Friends' ©2014 Patty Rybolt Designs. All Rights Reserved.

'Rhino + Friends' (1/2 brick repeat)
©2014 Patty Rybolt Designs. All Rights Reserved.

My inspiration for this assignment comes from these photo's that I took at our local zoo… Lion Country Safari. It is a drive through zoo so you can get up-close and personal with the animals in their own environment. The rhino area is large and they have many white rhino's of all different sizes including some of the babies pictured here.
The Design… Started with sketches of my inspiration photo's on my iPad (Adobe Ideas App). My family was on vacation and I did all of my sketches this week while on or waiting for airplanes. When I got home I opened the illustrations in Photoshop and colored and arranged the elements into a simple layout. The 1/2 brick repeat is sized as a fat quarter (21" x 18"). 'Tiki Surf Club' for Spoonflower!

This week at Spoonflower… Surf's up!
'School is out, summer has begun, and it's time to head to the beach.'
'Tiki Surf Club' ©Patty Rybolt Designs. All Rights Reserved.
What better way to spend the day than catching waves on your surf board?
The design…
The concept for this assignment was in my head for days. I knew that I wanted my surf design to include Hawaiian tiki's, surf boards, and sharks combined with some kind of type treatment. I  researched hawaiian patterns, Samoan tattoo design, Hawaiian art, flowers, patterns and even Ngatu (Tongan) art. After researching I drew basic outlines of surfboards, sharks, fish, paddles, a canoe and some tiki carvings on my iPad in my AdobeIdeas App. Then separately drew details like the hibiscus flower, leaf, the turtle and some traditional Ngatu symbols used in their art. The designs were opened in Photoshop where they were colored and layered to assemble the individual elements. When the images were complete I lined them all up to be the same height added the type 'Tiki Surf Club', then repeated the design in a 1/2 brick layout!

Crayon Monsters + Mosquitos for Spoonflower!

Spoonflower went 'old school' and asked their designers to dust off the crayons for this week's contest, 'create a monster design using crayons!'
'Monsters + Mosquitos' (crayon)
©2014 Patty Rybolt Designs. All Rights Reserved.

This design was done by sketching many monsters in pencil. When I had creatures that I liked I drew them with crayons. I couldn't get the color intensity needed to use as a fabric design so I remembered an old trick from elementary school… color over a hot surface.
Sister Madeline Carrabino was my art teacher from At. Augustines School from 1st grade until 8th grade. She was amazing.  She did incredible things with crayons, but my favorite was when she would iron our paper and then have us draw on it when the paper was still warm. It was beautiful the way the colors would intensify, merge and smell. So I did as I learned from Sr. Madeline and ironed my paper first then drew with crayons over the warm paper until the crayon had a smooth and more solid appearance. Next I scanned all of my monsters and the mosquitos and made an appealing pattern in Photoshop. I adjusted the color levels to bring the intensity up a bit more, then made a background design. I like the paper that kids use to practice their spelling homework, so I drew straight lines in blue and red to mimic that look. Last I added the type in a bubble using the 'Monstro' font. Done. Ta DaH!!

To honor Earth Day 2014, Spoonflower asked their army of artists to create a cut & sew pattern for a reusable shopping bag.
The first decision that I made was to pick the fabric that I wanted to use. Fabric strength for a bag is important so I chose Heavy Cotton Twill fabric. My 1-yard pattern is 58" x 36".
Next, I wanted to design a large useful bag, one that I would use when my girls and I go to the farmers market on Sunday. I like the hobo style and first designed an outline of  the shape that I wanted to use, then copied it and pasted it on my 58" x 36" Photoshop file.
The fabric design is a simple pattern taken from my india ink paintings of dots and pine branch bits that were scanned and manipulated in Photoshop.   The 'thin plus' pattern was designed in the same way.
The layout of the logo was designed and placed, and finally the directions for assembling the bag.
I can't wait to get my sample pattern for this one, I will post the process and final bag here when it arrives!!

Whales!

'Baby Beluga's Birthday'
©2014 Patty Rybolt Designs. All Rights Reserved.
This week in the  Spoonflower design contest… whales!
The restricted palette this week helped to determine the direction of this assignment. The colors felt like a baby palette, so I kept that in mind when I drew my whales.
restricted color palette
I researched the subject matter and looked for references and then drew a ton of whales and other sea creatures. I had in mind that my whales would be white (baby Beluga, Moby Dick, etc.) and I would use the blue to be the background. The tan color was to give detail in the pattern background (the seaweed/coral shapes), and I wanted to use the dusty pink color as a pop element (the octopus and starfish). I chose to eliminate the bright pink because it didn't go with the feeling of the other colors provided.
I drew elements in my sketchbook and on my iPad in the Adobe Ideas App, and opened the images in Photoshop. I colored and arranged the elements into a pattern of whales. Added the octopus characters, then the wave shapes, anchors, seaweed and the starfish. Finally, I added the party hats and birthday cake.

All designs submitted had to use this restricted palette (21" x 18"). Voting starts on Thursday, April 3rd, 2014, and continues until Thursday, April 10th, 2014. Please Vote!

'Wellies and Umbrellies' for Spoonflower!

April showers bring May flowers! This week's challenge was to design a fabric to celebrate the trusty rubber boot!
'Wellies and Umbrellies'   ©2014 Patty Rybolt Designs.
This concept came easy to me this week. I live in beautiful south Florida and am surrounded by amazing birds year round. I am constantly photographing, drawing and watching birds. (I took the photo's below).
Two sandhill cranes - backyard

An egret with rosette
spoonbills - local pond

Flamingo - Palm Beach Zoo
Ibis - pond

rainy season rainbow - backyard
Egret - backyard photo
The weather is gorgeous right now but in rainy season the only creatures happy to be in the rain are the birds.
I decided to incorporate the boots and birds with rain and some fun umbrellas. I was excited to use some of my sketches from my iPad's Adobe Ideas App. I drew some wellies, umbrellas, rain, clouds, flowers and accessories for my characters like the bathing cap, glasses, and hats to give them personality.
When the drawings were done I imported them Photoshop on my main computer and assembled them with color and pattern in layers, almost like a collage. When my characters were complete I made a repeat of the rain and clouds and added my characters!
Previews will be sized as a fat quarter (21" x 18"). Voting starts Thursday, March 27th, 2014 and continues until Thursday, April 4th, 2014. Please vote!

'Bedtime Magic' at Spoonflower!

Spoonflower's design challenge this week is all about bedtime! The routines we go through to put the little ones to bed are full of 'ritual, song, story, special objects and spaces'.
'Bedtime Magic' ©2014 Patty Rybolt Designs
When our girls were little they loved the reading portion of their bedtime routine the best. We started with picture books then moved onto 'The Big Red Kite', and other Berenstain Bear books.
Stan & Jan Berenstain!
Mark Brown!
'Arthur' books by Mark Brown were huge and as they got a little older my husband read the 'Kit' books to them from American Girl.
American Girl - Kit!
I always thought this time with the girls was magical. Good stories could take you wherever you wanted to go.

My first thought on a design for this theme was of magic carpets, so I went with it. I started like I usually do, by researching online and in catalogues. Checked out the kids beds and bedding and started drawing. I wanted to put a bed on a magic carpet and include side tables, and accesories needed for bedtime like lamps, drinks of water or milk, slippers and a pet. I know bedtime stories didn't happen without our black lab Midnight by the bed.
Most drawings were done in my sketchbook and on my iPad and opened in photoshop where I layered the images in the color palette that was required. I designed 3 bed vignettes and thought that they worked best in a half drop layout. When the pattern was complete I added the slippers, books and animals to complete the warm bedtime feel. The stars and moon shapes were added to finish the pattern repeat!
All designs submitted had to use the restricted 'bedtime' palette, and previews were shown at half quarter size (21" x 18"). Deadline for entry was March 4th, 2014.
